Hop heads, home brewers and micro-brew lovers — mostly one in the same — are up for a week of amazing beers and beer-related events, fun and socializing in the Philadelphia area. Brew pubs, bars and night clubs from Center City, Old City, West Philly and areas beyond, are primed to tap some special brews and welcome special guests from breweries around the nation and the world.
Now in it’s fourth year, Philly Beer Week is a 10 day celebration of beer, and more specifically, according to the official PBW website a 10 day celebration of “the Best Beer-Drinking City in America.” It features participating brewpubs, restaurants, bars and organizations hosting hundreds of events, festivals, pub crawls and more, all in the Greater Philadelphia area.
This year Philly Beer Week officially occurs Friday June 1st through Sunday June 10th, but some restaurants start the fun a little sooner, which means you might find select brewery offerings on tap at participating restaurants and bars a couple of days early.
The festival kicks off with the Hammer of Glory relay, which ends a the Independence Visitors Center, where Mayer Nutter will officially tap Philly Beer Week’s Brotherly Suds.
A huge number of breweries participate, big and small, including Boxcar Brewing Co., Dogfish Head Brewing, Flying Fish Brewing Co., Great Lakes Brewing Co., Harpoon Brewery, Pilsner Urquell, Saranac Brewery, Sierra Nevada, Sly Fox Brewing, Twin Lakes Brewery, Victory Brewing.
And an event we will be attending personally is Ride the Rails with Boxcar Brewery in West Chester. This trip involves a train ride from West Chester to Glen Mills Train Station where Boxcar presents many of their different beers, including their NEW Mango Ginger IPA, released on, and exclusively unveiled for the event. Food is provided by Pig Out BBQ.
