I've had better, but will post it anyway. While visiting family in North Carolina I was sampling various beers from a "Beers Around the World" gift package my brother-in-law had received for Christmas. We tried quite a few brews, and a good time was had by all, of course.
My brother-in-law and I both agreed that this beer had a rather punchy, but not very appealing flavor. It tasted like a lager to me, but according to some research I've done on this beer it is apparently an English ale, though all the label says is "Amber." From my experience, most ale brewers are happy to put "Ale" on the beer label, if not right in the title.
There was a bittersweet aroma and flavor, but nothing to write home about. Most reviews I've read on this beer are not very favorable. This beer is okay, though I probably won't bother trying it again. Maybe, we'll have to see.
Here's an interesting note. John Courage Amber is brewed by Scottish Courage LTD., Edinburgh, Scotland, but Scottish Courage is owned by Scottish & Newcastle (who also own John Smith's, Kronenbourg, Newcastle Brown and others) and I find no reference to John Courage Amber on their website.
Scottish & Newcastle are also licensed to produce and distribute (in the U.K.) Becks, Miller and Fosters.
Just a little bit of trivia for you.
