A fellow big beer enthusiast suggested I try this. I was planning on getting to it at some point, but... you know how it is: so many ales, so little time. Sorry about that. Anyway, I finally had a chance to try it out and I liked it. It is pretty straightforward dark ale. Not too bitter, not too hoppy, just smooth and enjoyable.
There is a mild hoppy nose with malty aroma taking over after mid glass. Pleasant tingle on the tongue, and while the bottle states that there is a distictive fruity character I didn't catch it. Maybe a little. Maybe I need my taste buds adjusted. Maybe the barley wine I drank before this spent a few of those. I know I should approach each tasting with a clean palate.
Though it isn't an Irish ale, I think this would go well with corned beef. I might try it with roast pork too. It's definitely the right beer for mashed potatoes and green beans. That's what I'm thinking about.
I'd buy it again. You should too, at least once. If you're up for trying out big dark beers. Interesting note: one label represents this as a "Strong Dark Ale" the one I drank stated "Dark English Ale." Was it not strong enough?
